Prominent leg veins are commonly referred to as spider or varicose veins. They appear on the surface of the skin and are a result of weak or faulty vein walls.
Popular cosmetic options for treating superficial leg veins are with 1064 Nd:Yag laser, endovenous laser and sclerotherapy. Our treatment method of choice at Schaumburg Dermatology is Sciton’s ClearScan YAG 1064 laser. This process does not involve any injections and only takes 15-30 minutes depending on the treatment area.
Superficial Leg Veins
- Spider Veins are small blue, red or purple superficial veins that can usually be found grouped together.
- Reticular Veins are larger than spider veins, approximately 1-3 mm in diameter, and are usually flat, appearing as blue or green veins beneath the skin.
We utilize Sciton’s ClearScan Yag to safely and effectively remove spider and reticular veins here in our office. This non-invasive treatment is most often performed on the upper and lower legs and ankles to improve the vascular appearance of the skin.
Varicose Veins
Varicose Veins are large, swollen vessels that twist and turn and typically bulge.
Varicose veins are more extensive and usually require additional testing to determine the source of the bulging veins. Due to the nature of varicose veins, we do not treat them here at Schaumburg Dermatology.
How Superficial Spider Vein Treatment Works and What to Expect
- Using a laser, spider veins are targeted with concentrated heat. The heat energy prompts the walls of the vein to collapse, causing the vein to be absorbed by the body and resulting in a more even skin complexion.
- Depending on the size of the treatment area, you may need anywhere from 2 to 3 sessions, performed 6 weeks apart. Our Sciton ClearScan Yag can remove spider veins from 1 to 4 millimeters in width and can even target deeper vessels that might appear later.
- After the treatment, you can return to your normal daily activities. For maximum results, compression stockings are required for one-week post-procedure.
